Στα «τέλη του φθινοπώρου» εκτιμά η Google ότι θα διαθέσει στους κατασκευαστές υπολογιστών το λειτουργικό σύστημα ανοιχτού κώδικα Chrome OS, το οποίο προορίζεται για φορητούς υπολογιστές και άλλες συσκευές που θα τρέχουν λογισμικό μέσω του Διαδικτύου.
«Θα είμαστε επιλεκτικοί όσον αφορά το πώς θα το φέρουμε στην αγορά επειδή θέλουμε να προσφέρουμε μια εξαιρετική εμπειρία χρήστη» δήλωσε στο AFP ο Σουντάρ Πιτσάι, επικεφαλής του προγράμματος Chrome, μιλώντας από την έκθεση τεχνολογίας Computex στην Ταϊβάν.
«Ελπίζουμε να έχουμε εκατομμύρια χρήστες από την πρώτη ημέρα» πρόσθεσε ο Πιτσάι σύμφωνα με το Reuters.
Το νέο λειτουργικό σύστημα βασίζεται στο Chrome, το πρόγραμμα πλοήγησης στο Διαδίκτυο της Google που χρησιμοποιείται σήμερα από 70 εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Οι υπολογιστές με Chrome OS θα βασίζονται στο Διαδίκτυο για να τρέξουν εφαρμογές γραφείου ή άλλα προγράμματα σε απομακρυσμένους διακομιστές, ή στο «υπολογιστικό νέφος» όπως ονομάζεται αυτή η προσέγγιση.
Δεδομένου ότι το Chrome OS είναι λογισμικό ανοιχτού κώδικα, η Acer και άλλοι κατασκευαστές που ενδιαφέρονται να το χρησιμοποιήσουν θα μπορούν να το τροποποιήσουν σύμφωνα με τις ανάγκες του.
Εκτός από το Chrome OS, η Google έχει αναπτύξει και το «ελαφρύ» λειτουργικό σύστημα Android που χρησιμοποιείται ήδη σε αρκετά μοντέλα κινητών τηλεφώνων.
